After more than 40 years Colombia's conflict continues and looks far from being brought to an end. The two recurrent themes at present are those of hostages held by FARC guerrillas - in June 11 politicians kidnapped on 11 April 2002 were killed in captivity - and the whereabouts of over 10,000 disappeared persons whose fate may be discovered if demobilised paramilitaries reveal their crimes and the whereabouts of the clandestine graves.

A recent protest (July 12 2007) against kidnapping put in evidence Colombia's political polarisation: ardent supporters of President Alvaro Uribe Vélez using the event to denounce the guerrillas & express their support of his 'Democratic Security' policy, his firmness & refusal to allow a demilitarised zone to negotiate the release of hostages, whilst others, including the vast majority of those whose families members are held by the guerrillas, asking for dialogue, a demilitarised zone to negotiate the release of hostages as well as an end to kidnapping.
